Copegus is a brand-name prescription antiviral medication containing the active ingredient ribavirin. How Copegus Works

Ribavirin is a synthetic nucleoside analogue that interferes with the replication of the Hepatitis C virus (HCV):

1. BIRTH DEFECTS AND FETAL DEATH Ribavirin may cause birth defects and/or death of the exposed fetus. Significant teratogenic and/or embryocidal effects have been demonstrated in all animal species studied. Copegus must not be used by women who are pregnant or by men whose female partners are pregnant. Extreme caution must be taken to avoid pregnancy during therapy and for 6 months after completing treatment.

2. MALE EXPOSURE RISK (often overlooked) Ribavirin accumulates in spermatozoa. Male patients must use effective contraception during treatment and for 6 months after the last dose to prevent exposing a pregnant partner. Male patients whose partners are or become pregnant during treatment should be reported to the manufacturer.

3. HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA The primary toxicity of ribavirin is hemolytic anemia. The hemoglobin of all patients should be assessed before initiation of therapy. Patients with pre-existing cardiac or pulmonary disease are at highest risk.

⛔ PREGNANCY (Category X): Causes severe birth defects and fetal death. Negative pregnancy test required before starting. Two forms of contraception required during treatment + 6 months after for both female patients AND male patients.

⛔ MALE TERATOGENIC RISK: Ribavirin accumulates in sperm. Male patients whose partners are pregnant must avoid unprotected sexual contact. Contraception required for 6 months post-treatment.

⛔ ANEMIA: Hemolytic anemia can be fatal in patients with heart disease. Baseline hemoglobin required.

⛔ MONOTHERAPY: Copegus alone is NOT effective against HCV. Always use as part of a combination regimen.
