What is Provigil (modafinil)?

Provigil is a brand-name prescription medicine containing modafinil, an agent that promotes wakefulness by acting on certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Unlike traditional stimulants, modafinil has a different mechanism of action and is specifically approved to help patients stay awake during daytime hours when excessive sleepiness interferes with daily activities.

FDA-approved uses

Provigil is indicated for the treatment of excessive sleepiness associated with:

• Narcolepsy – a chronic condition causing sudden and uncontrollable episodes of daytime sleep

How Provigil works

Modafinil’s exact mechanism is not fully understood, but it is believed to enhance wakefulness by modulating dopamine pathways and other wakefulness-related neurotransmitter systems in the brain. This helps reduce feelings of excessive sleepiness and can improve alertness during waking hours when taken as prescribed.

Dosing and administration

• Provigil is usually taken once daily in the morning or approximately one hour before a work shift (for shift work sleep disorder).
