Xalatan is a chemical analog of the hormone prostaglandin. It is a topical agent available in the form of eye drops with a concentration of latanoprost 50 mcg/ml. Its mode of action is similar to the one of its natural equivalent – the drug increases the flow of intraocular fluid from the hypertensive eyeball. As a result, the pressure in the eyeball slowly decreases. Since this symptom frequently accompanies various eye diseases, Xalatan is often prescribed in combination with other medicines. Today, this drug is among the high-priority agents in the treatment of such an ubiquitous disease as glaucoma.
Common use
Xalatan is primarily used to lower high pressure in the eye for patients diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma. This medication may be prescribed on its own or in combination with other treatments for glaucoma to effectively manage eye pressure.
Dosage and direction
It is important to use Xalatan exactly as your doctor has instructed. Typically, the dosage involves applying one drop of the medication to the affected eye each evening.
Precautions
Be aware that using Xalatan may lead to changes in the color of your eyelids and can also affect the appearance of your eyelashes and fine body hair. It may enhance the color, length, number, and thickness of your eyelashes, and in some cases, eyelashes may grow in unexpected directions. Additionally, Xalatan can gradually change the color of your iris to brown, although this change may not be noticeable for several months or even years.
Contraindications
Xalatan should not be used if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. It is also not recommended for pregnant women, those planning to become pregnant, or individuals who are breastfeeding.
Possible side effects
Some common side effects of Xalatan include blurred vision, increased pigmentation of the iris, redness in the eyes, a burning sensation, feeling like there is something in the eye, corneal inflammation, itching, upper respiratory infections, and stinging. If you experience any troubling symptoms, consult your healthcare provider.
Drug interactions
Xalatan should not be used in conjunction with other eye drops that contain thiomersal, as this can lead to the formation of solid substances in the eye. To prevent this, ensure a 5-minute interval between the use of Xalatan and any other eye drops.
Missed dose
If you forget to take a dose of Xalatan, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Never double up on doses to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
Symptoms of a Xalatan overdose may include eye irritation and redness. If you suspect you have taken too much of this medication, seek medical attention immediately.
Storage
Store unopened bottles of Xalatan in the refrigerator. Once opened, bottles can be kept at room temperature for up to 6 weeks. Always protect the medication from light to maintain its effectiveness.
